Also, it's usually scarier to go from the familiar to the unfamiliar, because the other way round generally indicates that the situation has resolved. Do it too often and it loses its edge, because everyone then starts to expect a scare at the end of the corridor. You can also acclimatise if it just continues to change in a linear fashion too often.Going slowly from a largely known situation (you're making breakfast in your kitchen) through a slightly unknown situation (all the power goes out) to a largely unknown situation (the emergency exit light comes on, revealing black, liquid tendrils spreading out of growing cracks in the floor and walls towards you) can create a buildup of suspense and fear. If the balance is too heavily weighted towards one or the other it won't be scarey, but if the balance remains the same throughout you acclimatise to it, so it's not scarey either.
